What Your Customers Actually Want from a Loyalty Scheme

What customers want from a loyalty scheme

Loyalty schemes used to mean stamp cards and vouchers that hardly got used and had too many holes in the scheme to ensure usefulness. Today, though, they’re one of the most effective means for engaging customers and encouraging repeat business. And to make them effective, it’s essential to understand what actually keeps customers coming back.

The data says it’s not just about the biggest discount. The Retail Loyalty Index 2026, based on a survey of 2,200 consumers across 51 UK schemes, found the top performers (Tesco, Leon, Pret, Wickes and Hamleys) win through clear value, trust and simplicity rather than offering the most points. That said, points are important. Every one-point rise in a scheme’s score lifts customers’ intent to keep shopping by 7-8 percent.

Price still counts, though. A full 58 percent of shoppers say they’ve switched to cheaper brands amid rising costs. But nearly two-thirds of UK adults believe (correctly) that loyalty cards exist to make them spend more, not to reward them.

In other words, customers want value they can trust, and they don’t want to feel like they’re being tricked. Let’s take a look at a few key features of loyalty schemes that can win customers over instead of turning them off.

Keep Your Loyalty Scheme Simple

Customers don’t want to work out how a loyalty scheme benefits them. The clearest schemes win, even against bigger rewards. For example, Wickes offers a flat 10 percent loyalty discount, but has no tiers, no fine print, and it consistently ranks among the UK’s top-performing schemes because customers know exactly what they’re getting. Compare that to M&S Sparks, which pays nothing unless you remember to activate offers in the app first.

If your scheme is complicated, you will likely lose customers. Simple and predictable beats generous and confusing.

Personalize Your Loyalty Scheme Benefits

Independent retailers and restaurants already have something big chains spend millions trying to fake: real relationships. A garden centre owner who knows a regular’s name or a café that remembers someone’s usual order: those are the foundation loyalty schemes are meant to build.

A birthday reward, a note about a favourite item, or early access to a new menu costs little but signals the same thing: this customer is known, not just tracked. That’s harder for a national chain to replicate at scale. For small businesses, it might be the easiest advantage to lean into.

Reward Customers Often, not Eventually

A points target that takes months to hit rarely changes behaviour or encourages repeat business. Rewards need to feel achievable rather than distant. Customers stay engaged when the next reward always feels close, not when it’s buried behind a distant threshold.

For restaurants and cafes especially, small wins that arrive every few visits do more to build a habit than one big prize customers might never reach. The goal isn’t to make the reward as large as possible. It’s to make it frequent enough that customers keep coming back to claim the next one.

Let Your EPOS Lead the Way to Loyalty

The good news is that you can have a loyalty scheme baked directly into your EPOS system. And it won’t cost you a ton of money to get started, either.

The first step is to pay attention to what your customers already tell you through what they buy, when they visit and what they mention in passing. Your EPOS system already holds most of this information. It knows who’s a regular, what they order, and how often they come back. Used well, it’s the easiest way to turn that data into the kind of small, personal touches that keep customers loyal, without adding complexity for you or them.
