How to Get More Google Reviews for Your Retail Business

How to get more google reviews

Picture this: someone new moves into the area and is looking for a local butcher. They search on Google, and a handful of options come up. Yours is one of them. What do they click on? Most of the time, it’s the one with the most reviews and the best rating.

That’s how important Google reviews are. For many consumers, these ratings that are featured in your businesses’ Google listing are the first thing that they look for when deciding whether your shop is worth a visit. In addition to that, however, ratings and reviews also help Google decide how prominently to show your business in local search results.\

The challenge many retailers face is that happy customers rarely think to leave a review off their own back. They have a good experience and get on with their day. So if you want those reviews coming in consistently, you need a bit of a strategy.

Set Up Your Google Business Profile

Before anything, you need to make sure your business is actually set up on Google. It doesn’t happen automatically, even if your shop has been around for years. What you’re looking for is something called a Google Business Profile. It’s a free listing that tells Google who you are, where you are, and when you’re open. It’s also where your reviews will live.

To get started, head to google.com/business and search for your business. Google may have already created a basic listing for you, in which case you just need to claim it. If nothing comes up, you can create one from scratch. Either way, you’ll need to go through a verification step to prove you actually own the business.

Once you’re verified, make sure your profile is fully filled out. Add your address, opening hours, phone number, website, and a few photos if you can. A complete profile looks more trustworthy to potential customers and also helps Google match your listing to the right searches.

Ask for the Review

Timing makes a big difference when it comes to asking for a review. The best moment is when a customer is feeling good about their experience, usually right at the point of purchase or just after. A simple, “If you enjoyed your visit today, we’d really appreciate a Google review” sign at the till goes a long way, and it doesn’t need to feel like a sales pitch. Just a genuine, casual ask.

Returning customers are also worth paying attention to. If someone comes back regularly, that’s a sign they’re happy, and a friendly nudge from a member of staff who recognises them can feel a lot more personal than a generic prompt. The key is making the ask feel like a natural part of the conversation rather than something bolted on at the end.

One thing to avoid is asking for reviews in bulk, for example by messaging your entire customer list at once. Google can flag this kind of activity, and it can also result in a sudden spike of reviews that looks unnatural. Slow and steady is the better approach.

Make It Easy

The easier you make it for customers to leave a review, the more likely they are to actually do it. Most people are willing enough in the moment but won’t bother if it takes more than a few taps to get there. A QR code that links directly to your Google review page is one of the simplest solutions. You can print it on receipts, put it on a small card at the counter, or display it on a sign near the exit. Anywhere a customer is likely to have their phone in hand is a good spot.

Beyond the physical touchpoints, your digital channels can do a lot of the work too. If your EPOS system captures customer email addresses, a short follow-up message after a purchase is a natural place to include a review link. The same goes for any SMS marketing you might be doing.

However you reach out to your customers, keep the ask brief and make sure the link goes straight to the review form rather than just your general Google listing. You can also add a review link to your email signature or post the occasional prompt on social media. None of these need to be time consuming, and together they cover a lot of ground.

Should You Respond to Google Reviews?

Getting reviews is only half of the game. How you respond to them matters too. When you reply to a review, it shows potential customers that there’s a real person behind the business who pays attention and cares about the experience they’re delivering. It also signals to Google that your profile is active, which can help with your visibility in search results.

For positive reviews, a short and genuine response is all you need. You don’t have to write an essay, just acknowledge the comment and thank the customer. Avoid copying and pasting the same response every time though, as it quickly starts to look automated and impersonal.

Negative reviews are a bit more delicate but just as important to respond to. The worst thing you can do is ignore them or get defensive. A calm, polite response that acknowledges the customer’s experience and offers to make it right goes a long way, both with the person who left the review and with anyone else reading it. Most people understand that things occasionally go wrong. What they’re really judging is how you handle it.

Building up a solid bank of Google reviews doesn’t happen overnight, but with a bit of consistency it’s very achievable. Get your Google Business Profile set up and looking its best, train your staff to make the ask feel natural, and use the tools already at your disposal to follow up with customers after their visit. Small habits done regularly add up quickly.

A good EPOS system can make a lot of this easier than you might think. From capturing customer contact details to customising receipts with a QR code, the right setup takes a lot of the legwork out of your review strategy.
