What the Temporary VAT Reduction for Children Means for Your Business

What the Temporary VAT Reduction for Children Means for Your Business

If you run a restaurant, café, or other dining establishment, there’s a government change coming this summer that’s worth getting your head around quickly.

From 25 June to 1 September 2026, VAT on qualifying children’s meals will be temporarily reduced from 20 percent to 5 percent, as part of the government’s “Great British Summer Savings” initiative. The aim is to take some of the pressure off family budgets during the school holidays. For restaurants, you may need to do some prep work in order to be compliant and ready for a potential influx of families over the next few months.

But it’s not as simple as just dropping your children’s menu prices. The reduced rate comes with specific conditions around how meals are presented, priced and sold, and getting it wrong could create a VAT headache you don’t want. Here’s what you need to know.

What Qualifies and What Doesn’t for the VAT Reduction

The reduced 5 percent VAT rate doesn’t apply to every meal you serve a child. HMRC is very specific about what counts, and the key test is how the meal is marketed, priced, and presented, not simply the age of the person eating it.

To qualify, a meal must come from a dedicated children’s menu, be served and eaten on the premises, and include a non-alcoholic drink as part of the offering. It needs to be clearly identifiable as a children’s meal from the moment a customer sees it.

That means a few common scenarios won’t qualify. Takeaway children’s meals are excluded, as are smaller portions of adult dishes that aren’t explicitly positioned as children’s meals. If it’s not on a dedicated children’s menu and sold as such, HMRC won’t treat it as a qualifying supply, meaning you can’t charge the reduced VAT rate for that meal.

This distinction matters more than it might seem. Applying the reduced rate to a meal that doesn’t qualify means you’ve under-declared VAT, which is a compliance risk. Equally, charging 20 percent on a meal that does qualify means you’re potentially overcharging customers. Either way, it’s worth reviewing your menu setup carefully before 25 June to make sure the lines are clear. The key is to be vigilant and prepared, so that you’re not caught unintentionally breaking the new rule.

Updating Your Pricing, Menus and EPOS

Once you’re clear on what qualifies, the next step is ensuring your pricing, menus, and systems are ready before 25 June.

Start with your menu. Your children’s menu needs to be clearly labelled and distinct from your adult menu, as this separation can be used to justify the reduced rate to HMRC should you ever be audited.

Then there’s your EPOS system. You’ll need it to apply 5 percent VAT to qualifying children’s meals while continuing to charge 20 percent on everything else, simultaneously and correctly on receipts. If your current setup can’t handle split VAT rates cleanly, it’s worth flagging with your provider now rather than the week before launch.

Don’t forget the end date, too. On 1 September, VAT reverts to 20 percent, so your system needs to be just as ready to switch back. And if you take any advance payments before 25 June for meals served within the window, those should still be charged at 5 percent. The rate is determined by when the meal is served, not when it’s paid for.

The Opportunity for Restaurants and How Your EPOS Can Help

It’s easy to focus on the admin side of this change, but there’s a genuine upside for restaurants too. Summer is already peak season for family dining, and a visible VAT reduction on children’s meals gives you something real to shout about. Restaurants that pass the savings on and market it well could see a meaningful boost in family footfall over the holidays.

It’s also a natural moment to think about family-friendly offers, such as meal deals, dedicated family packages, or simply making your children’s menu more prominent in your marketing.

But to make the most of it, your EPOS system needs to be doing the heavy lifting. Switching VAT rates, keeping receipts accurate, and reverting back in September should all be straightforward and ideally not something you’re manually managing through a busy service.

If your current system isn’t up to the job, this summer is a good reminder that the right EPOS setup pays for itself. Get in touch with our EPOS specialists to find out how Everything EPOS can help your restaurant stay compliant and make the most of the season.
